Report of Rewang Otago 2009

Rewang Otago 2009 was held on Saturday, 25th April 2009, which took place at the NorthEast Valley Baptist Church. Organized by Otago UMNO Club, its primary objective was to gather Malaysians from Dunedin, Mataura, Oamaru, Invercargill and Roxburgh in a harmonist “mutual aid” event.

The event started at 7.00 am, with people de-skinning and slicing the slaughtered lambs. Preparation for main dishes such as Nasi Minyak, Lamb Curry, and Ayam Percik were made at the same time.

By 9.00 am, more people arrived. They were divided into groups to perform different tasks. Some were helping with the breakfast preparation while others were busy making cum learning how to fold the Roti Jala. Most females on the other hand, were assigned to prepare Apple Crumble, Rojak Buah and Acar Timun for dessert and as a complimentary dish.

At 10.00 am, Jenga competition, a game of physical and mental skill, was conducted. It drew crowds of different age and gender. It was not a surprised that the game was won by two elementary school boys, Irfan and Nazmi.

The “mutual assistance’ continued until 12.30 pm, and then the place was cleared to serve lunch. At 1.15 pm, a mass prayer was performed followed by a tazkirah. The Program Director of Rewang Otago 2009, Mohd. Faried Anwar, and the President of Sarjana Otago Club, Dr Haizal Mohd. Hussaini, each gave their speeches shortly before lunch, followed by a certificate giving ceremony for the previous Sarjana Otago Club committees. A token of appreciation was awarded to Geoffrey Tanakinjal, who had completed his PhD and will be leaving Dunedin soon. By 4.00 pm, Rewang Otago 2009 was officially over.

Apart from the planned menu, we received a variety of other food contributions. The cakes from Dr. Rahman’s family, the curry puffs and doughnuts from Aida and Japi (Invercargill), freshly picked apples from Roxburgh (Mahathir), roasted lamb and roti canai from Mataura, and the delicious cakes from Bruneians, are all not to be forgotten. We also appreciate those who were in charged in making the dishes and handling the events as they had executed their tasks well. Overall, this was a successful event. It is our hope that it will carry on to next year.

Dlyn Azmi
